Windows abandons the iconic "blue screen of death" in favor of a black one
One of Windows' most iconic symbols, the blue screen of death (BSOD), is about to disappear. Microsoft is updating the crash notification mechanism in Windows 11: instead of a blue background with a sad smiley face, users will see a black screen with minimalistic text. The solution should make it easier to diagnose problems and speed up system recovery.

Microsoft has officially announced that Windows 11 users will see an updated «Black Screen of Death» in the summer of 2025. As Engadget reports, Instead of the familiar sad smiley and QR code, there will be a black screen with a short error message, indicated by the driver, and a stop code that will help you quickly determine the cause of the failure.
Microsoft’s vice president of OS security, David Weston, explained that the main goal of the changes is not style, but functionality: «This is an attempt to provide clarity so that we, together with customers, can more quickly figure out what went wrong and fix it.»
In addition to the new color, Microsoft will add a Quick Machine Recover feature. It will help quickly recover a system that does not boot after a critical failure. These updates came after a large-scale incident with CrowdStrike in 2024, when more than 8 million Windows devices crashed, including banking systems and airlines.
What else will change?
more technical details in the crash report itself;
less visual noise, just facts;
improvements for IT administrators who will be able to respond to failures more quickly.
Goodbye to the era of the «Blue Screen of Death»
The Blue Screen of Death has been around since 1985 and has become a meme in the tech community. However, in the new realities, when more and more users work remotely, Microsoft is betting not on aesthetics, but on speed of recovery. It seems that the black color should become a symbol of efficiency, not panic.
