According to Engadget, X has implemented technical safeguards that prevent Grok from editing images of real people and turning them into photos in «explicit clothing,» including bikinis. The ban, according to the company, will apply to all users regardless of subscription. In parallel, xAI is transferring all image creation capabilities to paid access, so users without a subscription will no longer be able to generate images through Grok. X also promises to geoblock requests for images of real people in bikinis, underwear, and similar clothing in regions where this is prohibited by law.
The announcement comes amid regulatory scrutiny. The report says the state of California has opened an investigation into how xAI and Grok respond to cases of AI nudity and possible child exploitation material. A statement from California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office cited an analysis that found more than half of the roughly 20,000 images generated between Christmas and New Year’s showed people in minimal clothing, including some that appeared to be minors.
X emphasizes a «zero tolerance» for child sexual abuse material and unauthorized nudity, and says it removes content with high priority violations. The article also notes that Malaysia and Indonesia have already blocked Grok due to security risks, and that the British regulator Ofcom has launched an investigation.
