YouTube has started blocking accounts in family Premium subscriptions if users do not live together

YouTube has stepped up enforcement of family subscription rules. Now, users who are on the Premium Family plan but do not physically live at the same address as the subscription owner risk losing access to the service’s paid features.
According to Android Police, the first users have already received official letters warning of membership suspension. The message states that after 14 days, access to Premium will be suspended, although the account will remain in the family group and will only be able to watch content with ads.
The requirement for the entire group to live at the same address has been in place since 2023, but the company has not actually enforced it in practice before. To verify this, YouTube conducts an «electronic check-in» every 30 days to confirm that all members of the subscription live in the same household as the plan administrator. Now, non-compliance leads to real consequences — losing access to ad-free music, offline downloads, and background playback.
The Premium Family plan costs $23 per month and allows you to add up to five family members. It’s always been a popular way to cut costs on YouTube Music and watch videos without ads. The company recently even tested a separate «two-person» subscription, which could be another sign of a gradual shift in its approach to monetization.
YouTube has long been trying to combat subscription «sharing» — attempts by users to share plans with friends or acquaintances who are not members of the household. Netflix has already taken similar steps, restricting account sharing, forcing many to take out separate subscriptions. For Google, this control means increased revenue from paid services, but for users — the risk of losing access to the beneficial Premium if they do not confirm that they live at the same address as the plan administrator.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how YouTube announced the global launch of the Hype feature, which allows users to promote their favorite creators, helping them get more views and subscribers. The new option appeared in videos of creators with fewer than 500 thousand subscribers.
