According to The Verge, the investigation believes that Rinderknecht generated apocalyptic images of a fire in ChatGPT a few months before the incident, and on New Year’s Eve asked the bot questions about responsibility for a possible cigarette fire. The case also includes «classic» evidence: surveillance camera footage, eyewitness accounts, and mobile phone data that records his geolocation near the initial fire site.
Investigators describe the chain of events as follows: in the early hours of January 1, 2025, the Lachman Fire broke out near Pacific Palisades. The center was apparently contained, but smoldering underground remained; with the wind blowing, the fire grew into the Palisades Fire. The fire burned more than 23,000 acres in the Pacific Palisades, Topanga, and Malibu areas, destroyed more than 6,000 buildings, and killed 12 people. According to the investigation, that night, Rinderknecht dropped off a taxi service passenger near the Skull Rock Trail, walked around the area, filmed video, and called 911 after midnight.
The suspect was arrested in Florida; he is charged with arson. The case is expected to be transferred to the federal court in Los Angeles. The presumption of innocence is emphasized: the court must prove the causal connection between his actions and the scale of the fire.
Law enforcement officials are treating the history of AI queries as contextual digital traces of intent — they didn’t cause the fire, but they helped identify the suspect and reconstruct the preparatory actions. The focus of the process still remains physical evidence: the phone’s geolocation, camera footage, witness statements, and expert opinions on the origin of the fire. The case itself is likely to set a precedent for how courts will work with AI platform data — query histories, metadata, and generated content — in conjunction with traditional forensics.
