10% of Ukrainian testers earn over $4,100 and only 1% earn over $6,900. How have the salaries of QA specialists changed in half a year?
As of December 2024, the median salary for testers is $2,000. In December 2021, it was $2,100, which decreased to $2,000 in June 2022 and has not increased since then. Which QA specialists started receiving less, and who is being paid more?
As of December 2024, the median salary for testers is $2,000. In December 2021, it was $2,100, which decreased to $2,000 in June 2022 and has not increased since then. Which QA specialists started receiving less, and who is being paid more?
The data is based on a salary survey conducted at DOU in November-December 2024. 2,089 testers participated in it (1,979 in Ukraine, another 110 abroad, but planning to return).
The share of new testers continues to decline. Currently, 18% of them have up to two years of experience. Six months ago, this number was 21%, and a year ago, it was 30%.
The highest median salaries for testers are in Kyiv ($2200), Odessa ($2125), and Dnipro ($2100). This is primarily due to the higher share of Senior+ level specialists and the lower share of beginners in these cities. The median in Lviv is slightly lower ($2025) due to the larger number of juniors and interns working there.
As before, salaries for testers using Java, C#/.NET, and TypeScript are higher. This is due to the fact that most of those using them are Senior level professionals and above.
This is also influenced by the popularity of languages among testers of different specializations. These languages are more popular among AQAs, who have higher salaries.
The median salary of testers using TypeScript is decreasing (-$300 per half year and -$650 per year). This is due to the growing popularity of TypeScript among testers, primarily among Manual QA specialists, whose salaries are lower than those in Automation and General QA.
For experienced Manual QA, the use of programming languages has a positive impact on salary. Seniors who use programming languages in their work earn $3,000 versus $2,870 for those who don't. Leads and above earn $3,400 and $3,200, respectively.
By company type
The difference in salaries of testers in product and service companies is decreasing.
The decrease in salaries for Automation QA specialists is observed in both service and product companies. In half a year, -$100 for Junior and Middle AQA in product companies and -$150 for Middle AQA in service companies.
However, General QA salaries in these companies have increased slightly: +$150 for Middle General QA in product companies and +$250 in service companies.
Manual QA specialists mostly have small fluctuations in median salaries. Only Team Lead salaries have increased noticeably: +$400 in service companies, +$300 in product companies, and +$250 in outstaffing companies.
In startups, there is a trend towards an increase in the share of juniors (24% versus 17% six months ago) and at the same time, there are fewer specialists at the entry-level and above (10% versus 23%).
Median salaries of men and women
The salaries of male testers at Manual QA are on average 8% higher than the salaries of female testers.
At AQA , women with up to five years of experience also have slightly lower salaries than men. There is no difference among specialists with more experience. Over the past six months, the median salaries of both male and female testers working at AQA have decreased.
In General QA, there is no clear difference in salaries between men and women.
