Sombra founder on hiring Juniors: "We're more open to it now than we were a year ago." Why the IT company has changed its stance and is striving for a "healthy balance"

In 2026, the IT service company Sombra has set its sights on a “healthy balance” in the team and is going to increase the hiring of beginners. The new strategy will cover offices in Ukraine and Colombia, but it is more relevant for the Ukrainian market. The founder and CEO of the company is convinced that no one will prepare new staff better than the employer himself. In addition, Sombra plans to carry out a transformation — all the company’s engineers must undergo retraining to become AI-first specialists.

In 2026, the IT service company Sombra has set its sights on a “healthy balance” in the team and is going to increase the hiring of beginners. The new strategy will cover offices in Ukraine and Colombia, but it is more relevant for the Ukrainian market. The founder and CEO of the company is convinced that no one will prepare new staff better than the employer himself. In addition, Sombra plans to carry out a transformation — all the company’s engineers must undergo retraining to become AI-first specialists.

"At the beginning of 2026, we realized that we were not hiring enough juniors and trainees. This kills several birds with one stone: people who grow in the company usually stay here longer. And knowledge stays with them. In addition, if we dilute the team with different levels, it also affects the profitability of the project and the company as a whole," said Sombra founder and CEO Viktor Čech in an interview with LIGA.net.

The company will implement this approach in all locations, but right now it is the highest priority for Ukraine. Viktor Chekh believes that in this way Sombra will be able to support Ukrainian specialists. In addition, the company seeks to systematically establish this process and bring it to a stable level.

"Because we realized that we were rushing from one extreme to another: at first we hired only beginners, then only experienced ones. Now we want a healthy balance," added the founder and CEO of Sombra.

AI takes over simple tasks, but that's no reason to give up on Junos.

"Every company has to invest and open vacancies for beginners - no one else will train staff for you. But there will definitely be some retraining. Now the concept of AI-first engineers has appeared - who think in the context of AI from the very beginning. We want to gradually make all our engineers AI-first," said Viktor Chekh.

Currently, the company has 15 open vacancies on DOU . Most of them are for Middle-level specialists, and only one is for beginners - Junior UI/UX Designer.

Recall that Sombra is entering the Indian market with an investment of about $75,000 - a similar amount the company previously allocated to expansion into Colombia.
