6 frameworks to help managers prioritize tasks and projects

The specialist notes that management is a complex process that is completely dependent on people and their:

• the system of evaluating our actions,
• expectations,
• money.

As Andriy Osypenko adds, this process always:

• It starts with data collection, and the better the data obtained, the better the decisions made.
• The next step after that is to create a roadmap.
• If you feel like you can’t reach an agreement as a team, I highly recommend trying a «Prioritization Workshop» with the team and stakeholders.
• Visualize priorities using one of the methods listed in the table below.

This will provide a wealth of information about:

• What is important to your stakeholders and why?
• The value of the activity for each of them
• The cost of a particular initiative.

Importantly, please don’t forget about the users of your product:

• Conduct CustDev interviews and make sure their «common sense» is represented and also participates in prioritizing tasks.
• An additional life hack for you is any framework, which is a set of characteristics by which you evaluate a particular task.

The 6 prioritization frameworks he recommends:

1. RICE Scoring Model is a prioritization model that is best used when selecting initiatives with varying impact and effort. It works well for products with large audiences and impact projections.
2. ICE Scoring Model — the system is easy to use and gives results quickly. It works best when you need to prioritize, for example, a list of ideas.
3. MoSCow (the acronym stands for the first letters of the English terms: «Must have», «Should have», «Could have» and «Won’t have») is a clear model for all stakeholders. Convenient for working on the roadmap and communicating with the team.
4. Kano is a theory of product development and customer satisfaction developed in the 1980s by Professor Noriaki Kano. It focuses on user perception and helps create the WOW effect. It is best used when you need to understand how users react to features.
5. WSJF is a tool used in the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) to help teams prioritize initiatives. It helps to quickly identify profitable tasks in terms of economic impact and evaluate tasks in terms of economic benefit.
6. Value vs Effort (value vs complexity) is easy to use, useful for quickly evaluating ideas, especially when you need to identify the most valuable features.
