"90% are just bullshit." Threads discusses whether it's possible to earn $8,000 in IT at age 25 today
Store salesman Andriy Gumenyuk wrote in Threads that after stories about «$8k a month at 25,» he feels inferior and doesn’t understand how to change the field without a financial cushion. His post provoked a discussion in the comments: IT professionals argued about how realistic such a salary is and what usually stands behind the high-profile figures.
In Threads, Andriy Gumenyuk told that he works about 58 hours a week (approximately 260 hours a month) as a salesperson in a store and earns $600-800. According to him, his savings amount to $300-500, so «quitting work now means being left without money to live on,» and the money will last only 1-2 months. He also noted that he doubts whether this time is enough to start earning in a new field, and concluded: «Huh. I don’t know what to do.»
Some commentators immediately questioned the story about $8,000. User @oleg81004 wrote: «I’ll tell you a secret: 90% are just s**t… Many IT professionals in Ukraine earn 2k. To earn 8k, you need to be a s**t specialist.»
@trexateyourex added: «Now is not the best time in this field, and salaries of 8k have long been absent anywhere, except as an exception,» and with irony advised: «It’s better to study to be a tiler — it’s a gold mine now.»
Those who have been working in IT for a long time also reacted emotionally. Artem @shevchenko1735 Shevchenko wrote: «F*ck, I’ve been working in IT for 7 years. I’m 40. And I also feel like a loser from this post. I’m giving myself $8,000. Wow.»
User @freakart.png shared his own «swings» in income: «from $1,000 to $6,000… sometimes up to $7,000 maximum, and then a drop to $3,500 and $2,000.» He summarized: «The secret? It’s as simple as possible, you just have to hustle a lot… be stubborn and go for your goal.»
Public stories about high salaries in IT often lack context — country, company, role, level of responsibility, and schedule. It is this lack of detail that makes such numbers a trigger for comparisons: in the thread under Humenyuk’s post, commenters simultaneously denied «8k as the norm» and acknowledged that even experienced professionals can feel demotivated when they see success that is difficult to logically explain.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how the median salary of IT managers has not changed in six months and as of December 2025 is $3,000. Negative dynamics are observed for Project and Product Managers, as well as Scrum Masters.
«What is this, the new market norm?» A marketer found a job with a salary of up to $15,000 and the possibility of booking at a company that aims to «prove that casinos can be different.» The community discusses
