“We analyze candidates very deeply, namely innate talents and abilities through astrology.” What strange job requirements did candidates encounter?

People & Business consultant Daryna Tokarchuk recently came across a job posting with requirements that struck her. To apply for the position, the candidate was required to provide the date, place, and time of birth so that the company could conduct an analysis through astrology.

This came as a surprise to the specialist, and she asked other IT professionals who else had encountered strange requirements during selection. Here are the cases the experts told about, and why employers think such requirements are justified.

This came as a surprise to the specialist, and she asked other IT professionals who else had encountered strange requirements during selection. Here are the cases the experts told about, and why employers think such requirements are justified.

Surprise candidates

Daryna Valerko, UX writer
I was asked to take a test for my personality type (socionics), which, by the way, is also not scientifically valid.
Daria Klyamar, electrical equipment installer
They didn’t hire me because they were looking for a choleric person based on temperament.
Vlad Zhigulin, AWS-certified DevOps
I was offered to screen out candidates through my test. It’s a shame to use what is for development as a tool to create red flags. Discrimination and disdain
Oleksandr, Senior technical program manager (Data Engineering)

Once upon a time, I was a candidate for the role of a middle manager — the hiring director asked, among others, 3 questions:

  • Do I have my own house?
  • Do I have a life partner?
  • who am i according to my horoscope sign

I found this strange, but then I learned that the company had a rule from the founder not to hire certain zodiac signs for management positions.

Kateryna Yashchenko, HR
I once saw the ability to read tarot cards as a required skill for an HR job.
Yulia Gurun, Recruiter
I once worked with a company, and they asked for clear photos of candidates because a physiognomist would analyze their features in detail.

Employers' position

Yevhen Nosalsky, Deputy Director at ZEMINVEST
I have a similar approach. I partially implement this in the selection of specialists. As a result, I get a cool team, where everyone has character and ambition.
Vera Kashuba, Co-founder at Talk Studio
This may be funny, but not very.

How can this have a negative impact?

Several experts believe that the requested data could be sensitive information. In particular, computer systems engineer Mykola Sydorenko warns that people who use their date and place of birth as a password may face hacks of instant messengers or emails.
