A company has been created in Ukraine for women who are beginners in IT. How Fancy IT works and what female residents will receive

Hanna Voitikova, Scrum Master at GlobalLogic, opened a company called Fancy IT, where she offers female beginners work experience in IT. She told dev.ua how it works.

About the idea

Anna Voitikova said that she has been living with the idea that there are not enough women in IT for quite some time. «I know from myself and my friends, who, by the way, have specialized education, how and why it is difficult to build a career in IT,» she says. At the same time, Anna considers the IT sphere to be prestigious and well-paid, even in such crisis times as now.

For a while, the girl worked as a career consultant, thinking that a good resume and LinkedIn profile would help beginners get a job, but her calculations didn’t come true.

«Employers are only interested in what a specialist will be useful for, and that is understandable,» she adds.

That is why, having gathered all her thoughts together, Hanna decided to open a company that would help women who are just entering the technosphere get their first experience in an IT company and find their dream job.

About the team and company

The company was registered in Ukraine as Fancy Aiti LLC on the last day of spring and Anna Voitikova is its sole owner.

I have a team of mentors (3 main, 2 as needed). They help me with product development. There are also two data engineers who research the topic of vacancies in Ukraine, collect information. The age of my team ranges from 35 to 66 years old. And more than 70% are women. And this is a matter of my pride. I believe that any person can be taught to do useful work, and in turn, given the opportunity to earn a decent living.

What will women get?

Fancy IT is a product company where Hanna and her team are developing an innovative job search product. The main idea is that professionals who join the platform gain the experience necessary for further development and a dream offer while working on the development of the Fancy IT app.

Hanna divided the entire process of cooperation with applicants into several steps:

  1. Formal experience of cooperation, confirmed by an education contract and an entry in the resume, LinkedIn.
  2. Women will gain knowledge and practical experience, such as working in an IT company. IT people have their own vibe, manner of speaking, slang. Courses do not give this result. Fancy IT residents participate in the full development cycle, with real meetings, boards, repositories, documentation, etc. After the residency, recruiters will recognize them as «their own», «IT people», and not people «who want to enter IT».
  3. Teaching residents independence is a significant area that Hanna pays great attention to, as well as approaches to completing any task, even one that is completely incomprehensible at the start. Employers appreciate this.
  4. Presentation of results and self-presentation. Also a super skill that helps in building a career. «I see how colleagues who do not refuse to represent the team and themselves achieve much higher results and are valued by clients and companies,» adds Hanna.
  5. Support until the result is employment. And providing feedback about the specialist to future employers if necessary.
  6. Fancy IT does not prohibit citing work done for the platform through an NDA. Designers add materials to their portfolios, and also have the opportunity to go with them to third-party mentors, such as Projector offers. Everyone else will be able to reference a working product, show what features they brought to it, and talk about the features of their solutions. This is the best ground for a quality interview.
  7. The product itself. Since it is about innovative job search, and residents are looking for jobs, they will have free access and their own impressions of what is convenient, what is not, what can be improved to get a better result. They understand the subject area, because they themselves are the target audience of this application.

«We do not have an academic program, we follow the development life cycle and the needs of residents,» notes Hanna Voitikova.

The company founder says that employers look at candidates with 1 year of experience and she herself is sure that after a year of practice, residents will definitely feel confident, but notes that everything is individual and this period may vary for each individual specialist.

Who has already joined?

Fancy IT already has 7 residents. According to the founder, with its current staff, the company can provide quality support to no more than 100 participants. Therefore, the number of places is limited.

«When demand grows, I plan to raise mentors from among the residents, and thus also support them financially,» adds Hanna.

In addition, she notes that a big plus is that the residents share the company’s values, and therefore it is easier and more effective to teach the next generation.

Who are they looking for?

The project invites:

  • Front-End Developer,
  • Back-End Developer,
  • Manual QA,
  • UX/UI Designer,
  • Scrum Master,
  • Project Manager,
  • Product Owner,
  • Business Analyst,
  • Data Scientist.

And also everyone who is interested in developing a web product. And those who already have certain knowledge and need real experience. «And it can only be formed by completing tasks for a real product,» notes Hanna.

About money

Hanna is not yet ready to answer about investments, but notes that she does not attract external investments.

Residents pay for educational services according to the tariff plan indicated on the website:

  • 299 euros for 1 month,
  • €759 for 3 months,
  • €1249 for half a year.

According to Hanna, the tariff plans differ only in the term of cooperation, paid in advance. The longer the term, the higher the discount. «For me, it’s an opportunity to better plan the budget in advance, for residents, it’s an opportunity to save money,» she adds.

About plans

The next stage that Hanna Voitikova plans to implement for residents at Fancy IT is the opportunity for her residents to earn money or work part-time with a flexible schedule that would take into account their lifestyle (children, family, everyday life, studies). «I see customer support as an option. I dream that mutually beneficial collaboration with our large, socially responsible businesses, such as „Rozetka“, „Silpo“, „Nova Poshta“, is possible,» she said.

The main difficulty is finding funds for residency and living while studying.
