russia is using the civilian population of Ukrainian cities, in particular Kherson, to improve its kamikaze drone attacks and the skills of drone operators, the Financial Times writes in a large article.
Since mid-summer, the civilian population of Kherson has become the object of an experiment that has no precedent in modern European warfare: a coordinated russian campaign to destroy the city by harassing its residents with attack UAVs.
Drones, sometimes in swarms, have been reported hovering over buildings, entering buildings and stalking people on their cars, bicycles or just walking. Their targets are civilians.
Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson regional military administration, believes that the Russians are «hunting» civilians. According to Prokudin, the regional prosecutor’s office and the police, since mid-July, Kherson and neighboring villages along the west bank of the Dnieper have experienced more than 9,500 attacks using small drones, killing at least 37 people and injuring hundreds.
A month-old video from the Bombardier YouTube channel about the situation in Kherson:
According to Prokudin, from the bank opposite from the city center, the Russians are launching the most modern models of unmanned aerial vehicles, improving combat techniques and preparing new operators for their invasion.
The devices used, including FPV drones, Chinese Mavic drones and sometimes large Lancets, have targeted vulnerable, everyday places: crowded markets, petrol stations, cafes, post offices and humanitarian aid centres. Dozens of videos of drone attacks on civilians are posted on Russian military and pro-military Telegram channels.
It will be recalled that since the russian invasion, the 1 million population of the Kherson region has shrunk to 158,000. There were 250,000 residents of Kherson, and now there are 60,000.
