Google blocks AI reviews for Trump's 'dementia' queries, but provides summary for Biden and Obama
Google Search doesn’t show AI Overviews for queries like «does Donald Trump have dementia?» — it only shows regular links. Instead, similar questions about other presidents sometimes generate a short summary. The company says that not every query gets an answer from AI.
Google Search doesn’t show AI Overviews for queries like «does Donald Trump have dementia?» — it only shows regular links. Instead, similar questions about other presidents sometimes generate a short summary. The company says that not every query gets an answer from AI.
The Verge reported on the selective behavior after its own checks: when searching for «does trump show signs of dementia,» Google displays the message «An AI Overview is not available for this search,» and switching to AI Mode only gives a list of 10 results without an AI conclusion.
What’s different for other politicians?
For queries about Joe Biden, the standard AI Overview usually does not appear, but in AI Mode the user receives a short summary like: «according to public information, it is impossible to unequivocally state dementia.»
For Barack Obama, the search sometimes generates an AI summary stating that there is no public evidence or medical statements about dementia.
Company spokesperson Davis Thompson explained that AI Overviews and AI Mode «do not show the answer to every query.» According to internal policies, AI summary can be turned off for sensitive topics when there is little reliable data or a high risk of error — in which case search prefers a list of links.
The cognitive status of the two oldest US presidents (Trump and Biden) is a subject of regular media debate, so the demand for such queries is high. The selective disabling of AI responses for one of them highlights Google’s main dilemma: quickly providing user-friendly AI summaries or avoiding mistakes on politicized and medical topics.
This week, Google found itself in the focus of political controversy for another reason: YouTube agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle Donald Trump’s lawsuit regarding his blocking on the platform after the events of January 6, 2021. This adds sensitivity to any decisions the company makes related to content about the current US President.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how US President Donald Trump signed an executive order approving a plan to spin off TikTok’s American business into a new company controlled by US investors. ByteDance will retain a smaller stake and license the recommendation algorithm, while Oracle will be responsible for data security and technical oversight.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
