Google adds new features to Gemini for working with PDF files in Google Drive

Google has improved the integration of Gemini AI into Google Drive, allowing it to handle larger and more complex PDF documents, including scanned files, spreadsheets, and large text reports.
As TechRadar reports, the Gemini update allows the model to process documents with up to 1 million tokens of context. This means Google’s AI can better understand large PDFs, answer substantive questions, summarize content, and create new documents based on the input.
The enhanced feature only works for users who have access to Google Drive’s AI features — specifically, Google Workspace subscribers and the Google One AI Premium plan. Importantly, the improvement extends not only to «digital» PDF documents, but also to scanned files and those containing large amounts of text or complex tables.
The changes build on previous updates that Google has been gradually rolling out since 2023. Last year, Gemini received a revamped sidebar interface in Google Drive, which added the ability to respond to queries and summarize documents. In January 2025, the Gemini panel also began appearing directly in PDF previews.
The new update is likely aimed at corporate users who work with a lot of documentation: administrative staff, lawyers, analysts. In the office solutions market, Google continues to compete with Microsoft and Adobe, which already have their own AI services for PDF work.
In July, Google also increased context limits for Gemini for Education users, opening up access to more features at no additional cost. This allows students and researchers to more effectively interact with academic texts, reports, and scientific publications in PDF format — another example of the strategic expansion of AI in the document management space.
We also reported on Gemini’s new feature for creating personalized picture books in 45 languages, including Ukrainian. This feature will be especially useful for parents and educators, who can use it to teach children about complex scientific concepts, family and social principles in an engaging way.
