The company reported on the approach and the first results on the Google Research blog. The solution works on the LearnLM model family, integrated into Gemini 2.5 Pro. The algorithm first «rearranges» the material for the class and interests of the student (sports, music, food, etc.), replacing common examples with relevant ones. After that, several views are generated from the personalized text: short «portions» with embedded questions, tests at the section level, presentations with voiceover, audio lessons in the format of a «teacher-student» conversation, and structural knowledge maps. For educational illustrations, Google additionally trained a separate model, and collects complex scenarios through multi-step agent pipelines.
The pedagogical logic of the project is based on the theory of dual coding: when the same idea is presented in multiple modalities, the student forms a stronger cognitive schema. Interactive quizzes in Learn Your Way provide instant feedback and direct repetition to «weak spots.» In an internal audit by three subject matter experts who evaluated 10 converted OpenStax textbooks (history, physics, etc.), the average scores for accuracy, coverage, and consistency with educational science principles reached ≥0.85.
The effectiveness was tested in a randomized controlled trial with 60 high school students from Chicago (ages 15–18). Participants had up to 40 minutes on a topic about adolescent brain development, randomly assigned to receive either a standard PDF reader or Learn Your Way. Tests showed that the Learn Your Way group performed 9% better immediately after the session and 11% better on a delayed test 3–5 days later (78% vs. 67%). 100% of students in the experimental group reported greater comfort during the assessment (vs. 70% in the control group), and 93% would like to continue using the tool.
Learn Your Way is currently a research experiment in Google Labs. The company is positioning it as a platform for further testing with partners around the world to test the effectiveness of personalization across subjects and educational systems and expand the set of tools — from age/level adaptation to automatic generation of examples that preserve the content of the original textbook.
