“A lot of the research we see on the impact of generative AI on this particular population is focused on improving the productivity of beginners,” she said in an episode of the “Digital Disruption” podcast, Business Insider writes .
According to her, AI tools that use natural language make it easier for novice developers to learn and develop early in their careers.
“I don’t see anyone getting left behind, mainly because it’s so easy to use,” Richardson said. “You don’t have to learn a new programming language. It’s all done through natural language.”
She sees the biggest shift for newcomers, not experienced developers. “It opens up opportunities for those who can work with technology,” Richardson added.

She compared it to how graphing calculators changed the job of a database administrator. “I think we’re going to see the same change in all of our professions over the next two years,” she said. “What they actually do is probably going to change as well, which means you’re no longer going to see this as a cost center that has to maintain old code.”
“But the role of invention, of context change, of synthesis, of those higher-order ideas that make a person extremely valuable, will be even more valuable,” she said.
The real risk, Richardson said, is not in being too young, but in refusing to adapt. “Perseverance, creativity — these are still very important, the most human things you can do,” she said.
Richardson’s optimism stands out from other industry figures. Google’s Jeff Dean recently said that AI could reach the level of a junior software engineer within the next year. Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott predicts that “95% of code will be generated by AI” within five years, while Anthropic’s Dario Amodei expects AI to write “virtually all code” by next year.
