According to The Register, a wave of complaints has been circulating on Claude Developers Discord and Reddit in recent days. Developers say that interactions with models have become «costing» more tokens, which is why Pro/Max limits are being reached faster: posts include scenarios where Sonnet limits are triggered in 10-15 minutes, and Opus becomes unavailable for some users shortly after the start of a session. Separately, discussions have accused Discord moderators of deleting criticism and banning, but Anthropic denies censorship and says that the blocks are related to violations of community rules.
One customer, who shared screenshots and his own analysis of Claude Code’s logs with reporters, estimates the change to be about a 60% drop in available token volume. He suggested that this could be a cost optimization ahead of an expected IPO, but Anthropic has dismissed this.
The company’s position is as follows: from December 25 to December 31, 2025, Anthropic temporarily doubled the limits as a «holiday gift» and to load free computing resources, and now the limits have returned to the standard. Some users, on the other hand, suspect a bug in Claude Code: in the GitHub discussion, it is mentioned that rolling back to version 2.0.61 reduced the problem for some, although others have not confirmed this. An Anthropic representative stated that the team is checking the signals, but has not found a defect that would explain the increased token consumption.
Background: Anthropic sells Free, Pro ($20/month), and Max ($100 or $200/month) plans, as well as Team and Enterprise with separate terms. For teams integrating Claude Code into development, unstable limits mean the risk of missed deadlines and cost overruns, as a work session can be interrupted in the middle of a review or code writing.
