iPhone users report temporary battery swelling during air travel

Some owners of new iPhone models encountered a strange problem: during the flight, the smartphone’s battery noticeably increased in volume, but after landing the device returned to normal.
According to Android Headlines, one of the owners of the iPhone 16 Pro Max noticed a swollen battery right during the flight. Because of this, the back panel of the smartphone partially separated from the body. After the plane landed, the problem disappeared without the intervention of the service center. A similar case was described by an iPhone 15 user, whose battery «swollen» during two different flights. After replacing the battery, the defect did not recur.
Journalists note that the problem may be related to a decrease in pressure in the aircraft cabin. According to one version, some lithium-ion batteries may accumulate gas, which does not appear at normal atmospheric pressure. At cruising altitude, the pressure drops, the gas expands and temporarily deforms the battery. After landing, the pressure normalizes, and the battery regains its normal shape.
There has been no official comment from Apple yet. At the same time, the publication emphasizes that the cases are isolated and only concern individual devices. Users who have noticed such behavior of their smartphone are advised to record the problem and contact a service center to check or replace the battery.
Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to temperature and pressure, and their swelling is usually considered a potentially dangerous defect. In aviation, the cabin is not completely sealed, and the pressure at altitude simulates being several thousand meters above sea level, which can affect certain electronic components.
