According to TechCrunch, early access will be available to users 18 years and older with a Quest 3 or 3S headset. The rollout will be phased in starting «today.»
Hyperscape relies on Gaussian Splatting, cloud rendering, and streaming: technologies Meta first demonstrated at Connect last year and is now bringing to the mass market. Capture reads the geometry and materials of a room, reproducing light, reflections, and fine textures, so the scenes created look like «digital twins» of real locations. A number of demo worlds have already been modeled: Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen in Los Angeles, Chance the Rapper’s House of Kicks, UFC Apex’s Octagon in Las Vegas, and blogger Happy Kelli’s room with her Crocs collection.
Hyperscape is a strictly solo experience at launch: the limitations are needed to hone the capture and rendering of scenes. Meta says that private link invites will be added once the service stabilizes. Since the calculations are performed in the cloud, the time to build a scene depends on the size of the room and the load on the infrastructure. Upon completion, the user is presented with a photorealistic space that runs natively on the headset.
In parallel, Meta announced new VR titles for the fall: Marvel’s Deadpool VR, ILM’s Star Wars: Beyond Victory, Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked, and Reach. The Horizon TV service will receive support from Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu, and a partnership with Universal Pictures and Blumhouse will bring immersive films «M3GAN» and «The Black Phone» to headsets. A 3D fragment of «Avatar: Fire and Ashes» will also be temporarily available.
Hyperscape is the next step in Meta’s VR strategy for Quest 3/3S: the headset quickly «shoots» your room, the calculations for building the scene are performed in the cloud, and the finished space is then reproduced on the device. If sharing is added and construction time is reduced, this could become a convenient «digital copy constructor» of apartments, offices or playgrounds for games and training.
