Meta will launch fraud warnings in WhatsApp and Messenger and strengthen filters for suspicious accounts
Meta is preparing new security tools for WhatsApp and Messenger: users will receive tips during risky actions and will be able to block attackers faster.
Meta is preparing new security tools for WhatsApp and Messenger: users will receive tips during risky actions and will be able to block attackers faster.
According to Engadget, since the beginning of 2025, the company has detected and suspended nearly 8 million accounts associated with fraudulent centers and removed more than 21,000 pages masquerading as brand support services.
What will change in WhatsApp
If you try to share your screen with someone who isn’t in your contacts during a video call, you’ll see a big warning. It explicitly states that the other person will see everything on your screen, including your banking information, so you should only share your screen with people you trust. The goal of this step is to thwart a common scenario where scammers trick you into sharing your screen to steal codes, passwords, and payment details.
What is being tested in Messenger?
On mobile devices, a prompt will appear if an incoming message has signs of fraud. The user will be able to forward it for AI verification. If the system sees risks, it will show a clear list of typical «hooks»: offers of work for money, promises of quick earnings, «remote vacancies» for positions that cannot be performed from home. The screen will also remind you not to send money by transfers and not to buy gift cards at the request of strangers. There will be «complain» and «block» buttons at the bottom.
Meta does not provide exact dates for the large-scale launch of warnings in Messenger, but recommends enabling passkeys now for quick identity verification and going through the Security Checkup to update passwords, enable two-factor protection, and review privacy settings.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how, thanks to AI, Facebook is ready to crawl into your gallery and determine which photos are worth publishing. If you subscribe to a certain functionality, Meta’s artificial intelligence will look through your photo album, upload your unpublished photos to the Meta cloud, and discover «hidden gems» that are «lost among screenshots, receipts, and random shots.»
