According to Business Insider, at an internal Microsoft meeting, top executives outlined a plan to make GitHub not just a code repository, but a single workplace for writing, testing, and running software. An audio recording of the meeting, which was obtained by the publication, captures Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s thesis: AI is blurring the lines between «application,» «document,» and «website,» so the tools should come to the developer, not the other way around.
CoreAI head Jay Parikh is in charge of the overhaul. He openly acknowledges competition from new tools like Cursor and Claude Code and wants GitHub to once again become the #1 place for AI projects. The plan is simple and pragmatic: speed up GitHub Actions (to build, test, and deploy faster), add clear analytics and insights on team performance, strengthen security, and meet local data storage requirements to open the service to new countries.
The GitHub team, according to Parikh, «sizzles» with updates every day, sometimes several times a day, and is preparing «the best GitHub Universe.» In parallel, Microsoft is updating Visual Studio — this is a response to the pressure of new AI IDEs. Another step is to give customers a choice of models: not only through a partnership with OpenAI. The course for «multi-model» was also confirmed by the head of Microsoft AI, Mustafa Suleiman.
Microsoft bought GitHub in 2018. Copilot has long been the most popular AI assistant for code, but recently its share has been eroding. In August 2025, GitHub left its CEO; CoreAI, led by Jay Parikh, is responsible for the transformation. The goal is to make GitHub a single panel for code, automation, and AI agent management across all developer environments.
