According to the company's support portal, Windows 10 will officially enter "end of support" status on October 14, 2025; after that, users are advised to either upgrade to Windows 11, purchase a new PC with Windows 11 preinstalled, or temporarily activate the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for consumers.
The company emphasizes that Windows 11 on new computer models offers more modern security and productivity tools, including the Copilot+ PC class. If your PC does not meet the requirements for Windows 11, ESU allows you to receive critical fixes up to a year after the end of mainstream support. That is, it is a “bridge” that allows you to plan an upgrade without worrying about being left without protection.
What is important for an average user to know. After the end of support date, vulnerabilities found in Windows 10 may remain unpatched, which poses risks to banking, online shopping, and working with personal files. The safest strategy is to assess the state of your device: if it runs Windows 11, then upgrade. If not, then decide whether ESU is right for you or whether it is time to upgrade your hardware. The official support page explains these options in simple language, without complicated instructions.
For businesses and institutions, the consequences are the same: the longer an unprotected system operates, the higher the costs of cyber risks. A migration plan or ESU connection should be approved in advance so as not to do it in emergency mode on day X.
