Oleksandr Berest, UX/UI Designer and Team Lead, compiled a list of skills that he considers really important for beginners in UX/UI design. Here’s what he offers.

Think in scenarios

Stop just drawing individual screens — that’s only good for dribble shots. The user interacts not with one screen, but with their sequence. Create scenarios by asking yourself, «What happens if the user clicks here?» for each interactive element.

Choose optimal interface patterns

A designer should have a «library of patterns» in his head: which UI elements are used in certain situations. For example:

  • Time selection on mobile = drum;
  • Web navigation = horizontal menu.

Newbies often try to invent a bicycle, like a child who, not knowing many words, invents something of his own: «churning», «toothy». Put your imagination to rest, turn to guides, proven sources and top services.

Draw a clean and consistent UI

This is the same as the previous point, but is about visual style.
You are not expected to be masterpieces, but your interface should be neat.

Follow the rules:

  • indentation system;
  • font hierarchy;
  • accents only where necessary;
  • principle of the «60-30-10» color scheme.

References are your friends

Get inspiration from guides, Mobbin, works from Awwwards and more.

  • Copy Rule: Borrow only one element from each work (indents, sizes, colors, or fonts).
  • Consistency: If you have an approach in place, stick to it. Buttons, fields, indents must be the same. Consistency creates predictability and comprehensibility of the interface.

What about research?

Jun is rarely allowed to do research, especially in large companies. UX researchers do it there.

What to do? — Study the theory, practice on pet projects and don’t worry.

And artifacts (CJM, user flow, personas)?

These tools help with design prep (not to impress management). If you do not understand their value, it means that you have not learned the material well, not that you are a genius who «does everything perfectly anyway».

And Webflow or 3D?

Don’t waste your time on it if it’s not your hobby.

What else?

  • Basic logic.
  • Adequacy.
  • Willingness to work.
  • And the portfolio!
