According to Wccftech, this information allegedly comes from an internal AMD presentation. The leak mentions a separate technical direction that directly relates to compatibility with the PS4 and PS5 library on the new RDNA 5 architecture. This is not about emulation «on the knee», but about full-fledged engineering work integrated into the platform.
The same materials also mention the portable version of the PlayStation 6. According to the insider, it is not a separate product, but part of a single ecosystem. That is, both the home console and the portable device can access the same library of games.
In addition to compatibility, the leak also mentions other technical things. In particular, support for ray tracing with compatibility for PS5 games, a power-saving mode for video playback and optimization of the chip area. Also separately highlighted is work with AI — for example, image upscaling and frame generation at the platform level.
Another detail concerns the cost. According to estimates by Moore’s Law Is Dead, the portable version of the PlayStation 6 could receive an APU with a cost of about $46.8. For comparison, even the updated PlayStation 5 chip is estimated at about $81.5. At the same time, the new chip, according to him, should be more productive than the PS5.
If this information is confirmed, Sony could bet on a seamless transition between generations. In this case, users will be able to run old games without losing their library, and the company will be able to keep the audience within one platform.
Backward compatibility is already a big part of the PlayStation 5, which supports most PS4 games. But for the first time, the PlayStation 6 will go back two generations and create a single ecosystem with a portable device. This could change Sony’s approach to its new consoles, not as separate generations, but as a single, long-term platform.
