On her LinkedIn page, Marakhovska shared screenshots of the next courses, which conveyed the idea that to master the QA profession, it is enough to «be a confident Internet user» and «moderately attentive.»
Also, among other «advantages of the profession» voiced by the organizers of these courses was that it «does not require knowledge of programming language, mathematics, or English.»
According to Kateryna Marakhovska, this announcement was shared with her by a friend who is on maternity leave and decided to ask «how she can get tested.»
«The advertisement for this scam included a video emphasizing that testing is a good part-time job for women for a couple of hours a day, where she can choose her own schedule when to work. And, of course, it’s an easy profession that can be mastered in 2 months, without knowledge of English, without programming skills, and other classic scams,» Senior QA described this advertisement.
Kateryna Marakhovska stated in her post that she had been repeatedly approached by acquaintances seeking advice on obtaining an IT profession, but they were all captive to misconceptions.
«IT professionals don’t work 2-3 hours a day, whenever they want, on the beach. But they have a busy schedule, deadlines, some work overtime or have part of the team/customer in a different time zone, which is why they work late in the evenings. Everyone was surprised when I said that my working day often ends after 8 pm, because I work with Canada and the USA,» said Senior QA.
The specialist noted that she constantly has rhetorical questions about «whether IT schools will ever stop bottoming out with cheap manipulations» and «whether people will ever stop falling for it.»
Software QA Engineer Anastasia Dyka, in the comments to the post, expressed surprise as to why the emphasis of such courses and their advertising is usually placed on a target audience such as women and mothers on maternity leave.
«I’m constantly writing to people who can’t find a job after taking courses where they were promised «remote work,» «high salary in dollars,» and «help with employment.» And then they say, «English isn’t needed,» huh. And it turns out that people just wasted their money and time on such «courses,» she says.
At the same time, Anastasia Dyka emphasized that she herself is the mother of a small child, but continued to work the day before giving birth, and was only on maternity leave for two weeks.
QA mentor Oleksa Mashchyts also left a comment under this post, explaining her vision of the situation with such courses and their perception by a trusting audience.
«Newbies don’t believe such posts, because the dream and belief in a fairy tale are stronger. They want to believe that here you hardly work, you work „like a regular user“ and get thousands of dollars. People are not ready to let go of their dream, especially in difficult times. And schools? They respond to desire. Yes, they could change their approach, but as a result they would simply lose customers and most of them would simply close. Why would they need that?», — commented Mashchyts.
QA Lead Artem Bezruchko also cited a situation from his own life to illustrate the persistence of such myths.
«A friend’s sister came to me and said that she had seen a similar advertisement and wanted to try it too. I was shocked after her phrase that they said about working for 2-3 hours. Well, in 2 hours of dialogue, we sorted out the topic and she decided that it would be better to remain a landscape designer,» the specialist shared.
