7 Technical Things Every Non-Technical Manager Should Know Tips from an experienced product

Senior Technical Product Manager Andrii Osipenko shared a selection of useful technical knowledge, without which, according to him, it is simply impossible to manage any project in Software Development. What does he advise?

  1. APIs — you need to understand how web applications interact with each other. And in some companies, the API can be your product and the main focus of work.
  2. Frontend / Backend — client-server relationship is our everything, it is the foundation and basis of how modern web applications work. Without this understanding, it will be difficult for you to understand both developers and testers.
  3. Monolith vs Microservices — typical server architectures provide a general understanding of how technical systems work, and most importantly, how they will behave during problems or heavy load.
  4. Cloud services — cloud eats the world for breakfast. Most of your projects will work using cloud infrastructure. It doesn’t matter what quality code you write, and how it will solve the problems of your customers — if the server on which it works is unavailable. Well, depending on the project, it can be the No. 1 cost item of your business.
  5. Webhooks are the basis of integrations with any partner service, starting from Payment Providers a la Stripe, ending with mail and SMS services.
  6. SDLC and CI/CD — the result of our work is, in one way or another, the delivery of working code. You need to understand the workflow of your engineers in order to be able to manage them.
  7. Relational DB / NoSQL — mostly IT business is not about code, but about user data. This is why companies absorb each other. How can we build a business and manage projects without understanding how data is stored?
