Boris Cherny, who leads the development of Claude Code at Anthropic, stated his Ukrainian origin and mentioned that his family lived in Odessa before moving to the United States.
This is reported by DOU with reference to Lenny’s Podcast/ Cherny said that he was born in Ukraine, and the family emigrated in 1995. In the conversation, he also gave a family detail about his grandfather, who, according to him, was among the early programmers in the USSR and worked with punched cards. Cherny described how the family remembered large stacks of such cards at home: for the child, they were ordinary «cards», and for the grandfather, they were the carrier of instructions for calculations. He added that the grandfather did not notice the transition to modern approaches in programming.
It is separately stated that Cherny graduated from the University of California, San Diego, was a co-founder and manager of several IT startups, and in 2017 joined Meta as a Principal Software Engineer. Since September 2024, he has been working at Anthropic as a technical specialist and manages the development of Claude Code.
The public mention of Cherny’s Ukrainian roots comes amid growing interest in Claude Code as a tool for developers in the Anthropic ecosystem. At the company, he is responsible for a direction that focuses on practical scenarios for working with code in everyday engineering tasks.
