According to a California Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) document, where companies report planned layoffs, Microsoft laid off 281 LinkedIn employees on May 28, The Register reports .
Meanwhile, 305 workers in Washington state will lose their jobs, who learned the unpleasant news on Monday. The cuts will begin on August 1.
According to reports on LinkedIn, the layoffs came after Microsoft pulled out of a contract to develop the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) augmented reality system for the U.S. Army. In February, it was announced that Palmer Luckey's company Anduril Industries would handle the project.
A Microsoft spokesperson told The Register: "We continue to implement the organizational changes necessary to best position the company to succeed in a dynamic marketplace."
He also noted that Microsoft regularly adjusts its workforce, that these layoffs affect less than 1% of the staff, and that the company is trying to streamline processes, in particular, by reducing the number of management levels and hiring fewer managers.
This is the third round of layoffs at Microsoft this year. In May, the company cut 3% of its employees . In January, those with low productivity were laid off. Separately, cuts were also made in various divisions, including security, experience and devices, sales and games. In 2023, the company laid off 10,000 employees.
