“At some point I wanted to change my passport and run away to live in the village.” Developers shared how they sometimes fuckUP and why it’s sometimes useful

Mobile Developer at IT company Akveo Yevgenia Shcherbina believes that you learn from mistakes, fake accounts happen and there’s nothing you can do about it. The developer is also not immune to mistakes and shared her own fake accounts experience. Other IT professionals also decided to highlight similar experiences.

How developers fake

Evgenia Shcherbina, Mobile Developer at IT company Akveo

My IT FuckUp is my first $300.

The first landing page was such a shame, I made a multi-page website using percentages and vinwidths and didn’t use static sizes at all. At the time, I thought it was about responsive design.

The site took me 3 weeks, a lot of nerves and tears, and as far as I understand, it never went into production.

I’ve been working for over 2 years now, developing applications for smart homes on wheels. Luckily React Native doesn’t have vw/vh, so I’m looking elsewhere.

Oleks Honko, Back End Developer at EvoPlay
Sometimes on Fridays I have a base on sale.
Oleksandr Borshchevytskyi, Product Owner at Tribute Technology
«Two falls are named after me"®
Andriy Kulyk, Full Stack Developer
I will go everywhere I go
Ivan Hrytskiv, Lead Software Engineer at EPAM
I was working on 3 jobs at the same time. And I mixed up the project list, I put everything in the wrong place.
Denis Abramov, Frontend Developer at VistaCreate
I got a headache when I went to the CCC and SP.
Yegor Alexandrovich, Full Stack Developer

I remember my second commercial project, for 4,000 UAH per reaction.

It still works now, and even brings benefits in the form of leads. But I recently discovered it, and I was just amazed at how it works at all. I used it too, by the way, the wind hid it there.

Igor Kostenevich, Fullstack web developer

I debugged and uploaded the code to production, forgetting to remove the return at the beginning of the function responsible for submitting all forms on the site. Neither the testers nor the backend saw that something was wrong.

To sum up: the client didn’t receive any orders for 3-4 days, and the whole team, including me, received delicious p****s.

Mykhailo Kolomoytsev, React (Nextjs)
I invested $9,000 in a startup, only got $1,000 back, now it’s stalled because I’m burnt out, my partner is undergoing treatment. And at one time, I was working for about $10,000.
Hanna Chashchyna, Front-End Engineer
I spent a month developing a website for a client and made a mistake — I took the templates from the wrong folder. It’s a long explanation, the templates were in xml with complex logic in the code, and the ui looked almost identical. In short, it was a super fake. At some point I wanted to change my passport and run away to live in the village.
Olga Maksimova, Frontend Technical Lead at OSF Global Services

In my youth, before the demo, I accidentally imported metadata into the dev from another project. At the end of the day. Almost until the morning, the architect and I were raking through my artwork. We managed.

I thought he would bury me under a spruce tree when we met.

Negative experience is also experience

Every phone call can become an experience, depending on which way you turn it. And IT people also support this thesis and benefit from difficult situations.

In particular, Yevgenia Shcherbina is sure that the first rule is to ban f*ck in the code:

  • The person who approved the MR bears equal responsibility with the developer for what was done. «However, the importance of returns will always be remembered,» the expert adds.

And Senior Full Stack Web Developer Denis Massalitin is sure that the main thing in a mistake is how you react to it. In addition, in his opinion, there is too much fear of mistakes in our culture. «This is still Soviet upbringing, school, grades. Plus the modern culture of successful success, fear of being judged by others. In fact, only the one who does nothing is not mistaken. Mistakes and various kinds of failures are a very important thing in life, in work, in evolution,» the developer adds.

He himself notes that he got rid of the «A» syndrome and «you still need to learn, and then do so as not to make mistakes» only by the age of 40. And now he is switching to the mental model of «move fast, break things, learn in process.»
