Ukrainian MilTech faces shortage of electromechanics. Companies are forced to train new employees, “attract” specialists, and look for alternatives to manual soldering

Ukrainian manufacturers of UAVs and robotics are finding it increasingly difficult to find electromechanics—specialists who can, among other things, solder electronics. The shortage of such specialists is forcing companies to train new employees or compete with each other for specialists, and some manufacturers are looking for ways to reduce the need for manual soldering altogether.

Yuriy Poritsky, founder and CEO of the Ukrainian MilTech company DevDroid, said this in an interview with The Page.

"In fact, the market is currently very competitive for people who know how to solder. They are needed for both FPV drones and all types of equipment that are supplied to the Armed Forces. This is actually the most scarce category of people," he explained.

That's why DevDroid selects candidates and then trains them for several weeks or even months. Then they monitor how the newcomers master the necessary skills and what results they achieve.

In addition, some FPV drone manufacturers are already opening their own schools where people are taught to solder from scratch. Previously, dev.ua wrote that Ukrainian drone manufacturer VYRIY launched its own free school for assembling FPV drones. Even people without experience were accepted for the five-day training, and those who got a job at the company after the course had their training days counted as working days.

It seems that this personnel problem cannot always be solved even with money. According to a study by the Ukrainian Council of Arms Manufacturers and CORE Team, 89% of 27 defense companies surveyed reviewed salaries in the last year. However, none reported that hiring became significantly easier after this. Almost half of those surveyed named electronics engineers as one of the most difficult specialists to find.

Also, according to Poritsky, DevDroid may need embedded development specialists who program the electronics inside the devices, as well as printed circuit board specialists.

Earlier, dev.ua wrote that Ukrainian defense companies are facing an acute shortage of engineers, despite salary increases. Manufacturers cited a shortage of candidates with the necessary qualifications and competition for experienced workers as the main reasons.
