By mid-2025, Kyivstar plans to increase network operation time to 10 hours without power supply

CEO of Kyivstar Oleksandr Komarov reported that the mobile operator’s network will increase the level of stability during power outages.

«We need to ensure a higher level of network stability. And here we are moving… in the second quarter, in theory it will be close to 10 hours. This is in theory. In practice, most sites will last from six to eight hours, even during blackouts. And now the entire network is already holding for more than four hours,» Interfax writes, referring to the message of Alexander Komarov, which he gave at the Global Outlook: Enduring Change discussion organized by the European Business Association on Wednesday in Kyiv.

The large-scale program to replace uninterruptible power supplies on the fixed Internet network, as noted by the president of Kyivstar, is planned to be completed in the second quarter. It is planned to replace about 90,000 devices. For stable operation in the 2100 MHz spectrum, the company has already built 1,500 base stations and 2,300, which are necessary for operation in the band.

Among the obstacles that may hinder the plans to accelerate investments, which Komarov speaks about, and increase the stability of the network’s operation, are inflation, rising metal prices, labor shortages, and problems with movement across the territory of Ukraine that arise for men of draft age.

In November 2024, Volodymyr Lutchenko, Technical Director of Kyivstar, reported that the company had begun preparing for blackouts since July 2022. Back in July 2022, the first orders for batteries were placed, and in September of the same year, active replacement began. The purchased AGM batteries have already reached the end of their service life and the company is replacing them with high-capacity lithium-iron-phosphate batteries. At that time, it was reported that 125,000 such AGM batteries had already been replaced.

Since the start of the full-scale war, Kyivstar has made significant investments to ensure energy independence. Starting in 2022, the company has invested over UAH 1.9 billion in this direction to ensure maximum service continuity.
