Block, a company led by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has informed employees that it will eliminate some positions. This is the second wave of layoffs at the company since the beginning of the year, this time affecting the Cash App and Square divisions.
This was reported by Business Insider, citing an internal company email and sources familiar with the situation.
The optimization will affect the Customer Ops, Risk Ops, and Learning & Content Operations teams. The changes include job cuts, redistribution of responsibilities, and reporting lines. Some employees will permanently leave the company, receiving compensation packages similar to those in February, while others will move to consulting positions. The exact number of laid-offs is not yet disclosed, and Block itself declined to comment.
While the statement doesn’t specifically mention AI, management emphasizes “using better tools to perform routine tasks” and refocusing teams on more complex solutions. Two days earlier, Block reported a 22% increase in third-quarter gross profit to $3.24 billion.
Recall that during the first wave of layoffs in February 2026, Block reduced its staff by more than 40% - from more than 10,000 to less than 6,000 employees. At that time, Jack Dorsey explained this not by financial difficulties, but by the fact that AI and other “intelligent tools” have radically changed the essence of doing business. The restructuring is expected to allow the company to achieve annual savings of $800 million to $900 million.
