As TechCrunch reports, Epic Games has officially closed the antitrust case against Samsung that it filed in September 2024. The lawsuit concerned the Auto Blocker feature on Samsung smartphones, which blocked the download of applications from alternative sources other than Google Play and the Galaxy Store. Epic claimed that this was part of a conspiracy between Samsung and Google to limit competition in the field of mobile software distribution.
«We are closing the case against Samsung after discussions between the parties. We are grateful that Samsung is willing to consider our concerns,» Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said on social media.
Epic declined to comment further, and Samsung and Google did not respond to requests for comment. Google’s position has remained consistent, calling the lawsuit baseless and saying Android device manufacturers have the right to implement their own security measures.
Samsung, in turn, then announced its intention to «resolutely defend itself against baseless accusations.»
In 2023, Epic already won a high-profile antitrust case against Google, accusing the company of an illegal monopoly in the mobile software market. The court ordered Google to open its ecosystem to third-party stores. The decision is still being appealed. In 2024, Epic also launched its own mobile store, where it distributes both its own and third-party games. In this context, the settlement with Samsung opens up new opportunities for the company on Android devices outside the Play Store.
