Google expands AI Overviews to a wider audience and introduces experimental AI Mode in search. They promise “faster and better” answers

Google’s AI Overviews feature in search, which can help with more complex questions, from coding to advanced math and multimodal queries, is now rolling out in the US, Google said in a blog post. The company said that with the enhanced capabilities of Gemini 2.0, users will get faster and better answers, and AI overviews will be shown more often for these types of queries. AI Overviews will now also be available to teenagers without adult involvement.

Another update was the launch of the AI ​​Mode feature in experimental mode. The new search mode, as the company said, expands the capabilities of AI Overviews with expanded reasoning, thinking, and multimodal capabilities. «You can ask anything on your mind and get a useful AI-powered answer with the ability to go further with additional questions and useful web links,» Google added, for example, to explore a new concept or compare detailed options.

The company said that experts who tested the new feature «found AI Mode incredibly useful — they particularly appreciated the speed, quality, and freshness of the answers.» Google One AI Premium subscribers are being offered the first chance to try AI Mode.

Google also added that it is working on improving the objectivity of AI answers in search, as some answers sometimes seem to reflect a person or reflect a certain opinion. In future updates, it plans to add more visual answers with images and videos, enhanced formatting, new ways to access useful web content, and more.

The company previously reported that testing of Gemini 2.0 in search and in AI Overviews, which are displayed at the top of Google search, began in mid-December 2024. At that time, Google introduced a new version of Gemini 2.0, which can generate images and audio in different languages, help with Google searches, and more, and also showed experimental agents for programming and video games.
