22-year-old Front-end developer Yevhen Klymenko raised the topic of replacing development with artificial intelligence on LinkedIn. He worries that AI will make it even harder to find a job in the future, and that he wasted several years studying programming for nothing. What do IT professionals think about the prospects of the industry?

«Within the next 1–4 years, 100% of code will be written by artificial intelligence.
This was announced yesterday by Dario Amodei, the head of the company that creates Claude. This means that the usual work of a developer will change forever. Programmers will no longer write code manually — they will become AI curators, testers and solution architects. The most important thing is not the ability to code, but an understanding of logic and business tasks. Because of this, most programmers will be unemployed, and competition will increase several times. Instead of the conventional 20 developers, only 4 AI developers will be needed. And the number of vacancies will remain approximately the same, or slightly more. What do you think about this? How do you think web development and development in general will change over the next 10 years in terms of competition, salaries and employment? And what do you need to know and be able to do now to remain a sought-after web developer over the next decade? «, he asked .

Aitivets explained: he is 22 years old, and he is looking for a way to realize himself, so as not to be a beggar in his old age. «I am very tired of constantly seeing news about AI, + you can’t even get to HR because of thousands of reviews. I have a strong feeling that I have been studying the web for 2-3 years in vain. I even asked DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Grok — they also say that this will happen: salaries will fall, and there will be fewer vacancies. The last few days I have been feeling very bad emotionally, it is like severe anxiety with pain — because of the feeling that I am doing stupid things instead of building my future. And because of this, I have been feeling very terrible for about 6 months. Please write your realistic forecast in the comments,» he asked the community.

There are almost one and a half hundred comments under the developer’s post.

Senior Wordpress/PHP/React/Laravel Developer Valentyn Gorobets says that changes are already happening. «But I think it will be gradual, not 2-3 years exactly. It’s like why learn PHP in 2009, 16 years have passed, and it’s still dying, but we have to admit that it’s still dying slowly. That’s how it is with IA — more and more developers are trying to use IA in development. I think that IA will write better and better code, and developers will use IA better and better, and gradually, for conditional program development it took half a year and 10 developers, and now it will take 2-3 developers and a few months. I also think that farms are a good example, conditionally in 1990, 10 workers were needed to cultivate 10 hectares, and now 1-2 people and smart equipment,» he adds.

Oleks Tugiy, Project Delivery Manager, shared his story, which was influenced by many factors, in addition to AI: «In 2022, I left the army, behaved badly and had no professional education. I went to work for a promising Internet provider, where I got stuck for five years, became the head of technical support, which I built myself, became a system administrator, and for the last year I studied PHP to write a micro-CRM, which made my life easier. I didn’t learn this at school, and I was kicked out of university, so… At 27, I realized that I wouldn’t make money at the provider, and my web dev skills allowed me to shine in website development, a new era began. For my software skills, they somehow pushed me into management, more into organizational projects, and that’s how I got acquainted with micro-startups, basic marketing. Somehow I started to solve the issue of hiring IT specialists and began to hold offline events, build communities, get to know people whom I could then hunt for in projects. I ended up on the radar of acquaintances, who offered me a job as a scrum master in their project. This is where my path to adult IT management began, where I am still spinning. I have solid experience.

Senior Engineering Manager Dima Maleev notes that programming will change. «We will simply do more, mistakes will become more frequent and more expensive, work will remain the same. Don’t worry and learn to use AI for work, and everything will be fine. If AI replaces you, you should never have been a programmer,» he wrote.

Senior PHP Developer Petro Marcheno, at this stage of AI development, does not see convincing arguments in favor of AI completely replacing developers. «Even from my own experience — having a background in programming and understanding the principles, writing code in an unfamiliar language using AI still requires effort. At the same time, I believe that AI will give a powerful boost to development. It’s like a new level of abstraction. Once everyone wrote in assembler, then in C, and over time the level of abstraction increased, as did the speed of development — but this in no way led to a decrease in the number of developers,» he says.

«And in another 5-7 years, the pendulum will swing in the opposite direction, when we will have to rake through tons of brushwork that „artificial intelligence“ has wrapped up. No agent or IDE with LLM integrations can produce a normal creation of something more than a simple game or a simple service. Not to mention the quality of the code, which is full of bugs, vulnerabilities, and security breaches. So far, it is possible and can cope with a small code base, but even with an average-sized project in any LLM, the roof will blow away from overflowing the context window,» notes Senior Software Engineer Yaroslav Baranovsky .

IT Consultant Serhiy Khvashchuk is convinced that there is a lot of work from those who have just started coding. «They really don’t have much money and don’t need high quality. But there are already a lot of such projects. Work will indeed change and it will be harder to get a job, and easier to get out of it. Many people understand this and go into their projects, but it’s not easier. Here the question is about your goals — a one-room apartment is a pity for today. And it was a pity a few years ago. The best alternative is to buy 10-15 acres and a frame house or build it yourself. Much simpler, cheaper and more opportunities for any budget. That is, work towards your goal + a career for life is not possible for everyone and not for everyone. The world will not stop changing, and in 30 years there will be another crisis, and in 60 another one,» he predicts.

«Every year I hear that programmers will be replaced. This was before AI. If AI replaces programmers, then, I think, it will eliminate many professions before that. But what I see is that it cannot even replace copywriters. So far, all these slogans are attempts to raise money at the expense of people who will rush to invest in this. We need to recoup the investment and show customers that this is the best,» says Kirill Uovalenko, Fullstack Developer.
