Young startupers in the US are putting relationships on hold to survive the AI race
A new norm is forming in Silicon Valley: some young startup founders are consciously cutting back on their social lives and giving up dating in order not to lose momentum in product development and fundraising.
A new norm is forming in Silicon Valley: some young startup founders are consciously cutting back on their social lives and giving up dating in order not to lose momentum in product development and fundraising.
According to Business Insider, 18-year-old Mahir Laul took a sabbatical from New York University and started working full-time on HR-tech startup Velric. He says he cares most about work and the gym, leaving little time for romance. Among the young founders we spoke to, those who started relationships before launching their companies are more likely to be in them, while others are going into «monk mode» and working long shifts.
Entrepreneurs explain it simply: the «opportunity cost» is too high, because every evening away from their laptop means a missed code sprint, pitch deck, or hiring. Some avoid dating apps, calling them a distraction, while others move dating to professional environments, even flirting on LinkedIn. Some interviewees also talk about distrust: while the company is growing, they are afraid that potential partners will evaluate them based on money and status. An additional factor is San Francisco, where dating often takes place in the same tech circles, and nightlife is not the city’s strong point.
The article also mentions indirect signs that the industry is working harder than before. Specifically, Ramp recorded an increase in corporate card spending on Saturdays in the Bay Area, and Placer.ai reported a 21,6% year-over-year increase in San Francisco office building occupancy in July.

Тест dev.ua
