He made the remarks during a speech at the US Federal Reserve, CNN reports. Altman stressed that systems that still allow voice authentication can be dangerous: «AI has already learned to overcome most methods of identification, except passwords.» According to him, in the near future, fake calls will be replaced by video calls or FaceTime, which will be indistinguishable from real ones.
He recalled recent cases of parents in the US being scammed by imitating their children’s voices, as well as an attempt by scammers to contact foreign ministers and a governor on behalf of the Secretary of State using AI voice cloning.
OpenAI, despite the caveats, is aggressively expanding its presence in Washington. The company will open an office in 2025 to provide training for government officials and teachers, discuss AI regulation, and research its economic impact. The team will be led by Chan Pak and Joe Larson, who will join OpenAI from Anduril.
While Altman points out the serious risks, OpenAI is also urging authorities not to impose excessive restrictions that could hurt the US’s global competitiveness in AI. In particular, the company supported removing a provision that would allow states to regulate AI themselves.
Altman also admitted that he is worried about the prospect of losing control over superintelligence: «I’m afraid that someone will gain access to superintelligence before anyone else and use it to attack critical infrastructure or even create bioweapons.»
The speech was accompanied by an OpenAI report on the economic impact of ChatGPT, compiled by the company’s chief economist, Ronnie Chatterjee. It says that in the US, 20% of users use ChatGPT as a personal tutor, and more than half of them are young people aged 18 to 34. Altman said that while some professions will disappear, new forms of employment will emerge, even if they are «jobs for status or play.»
