The recruiter advised how to get out of the situation when you don't know something at the interview. What do IT-guis think about this?

Recruiter Alyona Kashchuk believes that it is normal to say «I don’t know» during an interview. Here is how she advises to behave in this situation. And what is the response of the IT-guis to this.

During the interview, as the recruiter Alyona Kashchuk reminds, the candidate will definitely be asked questions that will be difficult to answer.

The recruiter considers the most correct strategy to be frank and open during the interview.

«So, the answer „I didn’t work with it“ will be quite adequate. Because the company considers you not only as a candidate with good skills, but also as a person as a whole,» said the specialist.

Alyona thinks that it might work best if you supplement the sentence «I haven’t worked with this» with the thought «…but, this is how I approach it (or this is how I understand it)…».

«Companies don’t hire the perfect candidate—they hire you. Therefore, you should not exaggerate your expertise at the interview. It will come out sooner or later anyway,» explains the recruiter.

She likes to focus on three simple things:

  1. Knowledge is something that can be learned.
  2. Skills are something that can be improved.
  3. Your personality is your superpower that you already have.

Ramina Blyznyuk, Senior Customer Support Manager at YouScan, completely agrees with Alyona, although she notes that it was difficult for her to learn to say such a thing. #But «I don’t know, but it’s very interesting, I’ll definitely pay attention to this issue», is much better than some fictions/excuses! she adds.

«Everything can be learned if there is a desire,» writes UI/UX Designer Maryna Shevchenko. And, in her opinion, such a desire can be seen by recruiters right away.

And Android Developer Artem Pelevin agrees with her. «The main thing is not knowledge, but the desire for it. Not only if they hire a lot of developers,» the developer writes. He adds that there are fewer questions about the Juns than the Middles, etc. «But any white spot in knowledge can be closed. The question is of general relevance,» emphasized Artem.

However, Senior frontend developer Viktor Popov believes that nowadays the phrase «I don’t know» in an interview is a sentence to oneself. «If companies require reliable knowledge even from the section „will be a plus“ in their own vacancies, then what can we say about any gaps in knowledge?
— and what can you say about (_some clever rarely used technology_)
— I don’t know her
— we will contact you (no),» adds the developer.

Senior Manual QA-engineer Oleksandra Tkalych agrees with Victor. According to the specialist, as a rule later, the fact that they did not know or did not work with something becomes the reason for refusal, as the eichars answer.

Artem Kravchenko, Senior Software Engineer, writes that it would be interesting to see the statistics of employees whose interviews focused on the approach described by Alyona. «So that reality is not exactly like that and vice versa,» he adds.
