Ukraine plans to deploy a constellation of 300 UASAT-NANO communication satellites

The Ukrainian UASAT LEO program involves the creation of an orbital constellation of 300 communication satellites. The first device is planned to be launched in October 2026, and then the system is planned to be scaled up in stages.

According to Military, the executive director of Stetman, Dmytro Stetsenko, spoke about the parameters of the future system. According to him, 300 satellites will be enough for Ukraine to provide the most concentrated global coverage within the UASAT LEO program.

The project is planned to be deployed not in one launch, but in several waves. The first Ukrainian satellite is to be launched into orbit in October this year using a SpaceX rocket. Already in 2027, the developers expect to launch 120 satellites, and in each subsequent year — about 100-105 more. Thus, the system should gradually grow into a full-fledged satellite communications constellation of Ukrainian production.

Stetsenko also noted that this project may have not only domestic significance. In the future, Ukraine, according to him, is able to offer European partners cheaper satellite communication technologies as a contribution to common security. That is, it is not just about its own infrastructure, but also about a possible export or cooperation direction.

At the same time, the system is being designed with a margin for upgrades. The service life of one satellite is estimated at 5-7 years, so approximately three years after the start of the program, additional launches will have to begin to gradually replace older devices. This means that UASAT-NANO is being considered as a continuously maintained orbital network, rather than a one-off series of launches.

Against the backdrop of war and dependence on external communication channels, the creation of its own low-orbit constellation looks like not only a technological but also a strategic step for Ukraine. If the announced launch schedule can be met, the country will receive its own satellite resource for communication and the basis for the further development of space services.

Previously, dev.ua wrote about how the Ukrainian company STETMAN, which works with satellite solutions for defense, is promoting the project of its own satellite constellation UASAT NANO: the network has already passed initial regulatory registration, and the first device is planned to be launched as a test.
