The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine is reflected in all forms of art, and video games are no exception. In the fourth year of the great war, Ukrainian developers are working on a number of projects of different spirit that address this topic; dev.ua has collected the most notable games about the Russian-Ukrainian war in this material.

«Glory to the Heroes»

Glory to the Heroes is a tactical single-player and PvPvE military simulator set during the Russian-Ukrainian war.

«The goal of Glory to the Heroes is to show all the brutality and hell of modern warfare, immersing players in the role of an ordinary soldier on the battlefield with completely new methods of warfare, where intense artillery and trench battles are mixed with high-tech drones. Through an accurate and historical recreation of real events, Glory to the Heroes seeks to serve educational, journalistic, and cultural dissemination purposes,» the developers say.

The game was one of the first ambitious projects in the setting of a Russian invasion, and the first to be embroiled in scandals even before its release. The reason was the developers' decision to add a multiplayer mode to the realistic military shooter, with the ability to play as Russian soldiers.

After the outrage of Ukrainian players, the developers from Spacedev Games abandoned this idea, and now only artificial intelligence will play for the Russians in the game.

Glory to the Heroes is currently preparing for an early access release in late 2025. At release, the game will have one episode of the story campaign, the «Operation» game mode with the battle for the city of Izyum, the «Infantry Skirmish» game mode with the battles for Krynki, as well as an unannounced map with battles in the city.

Zero Losses

A project from Marevo Collective (known for the horror film No One Lives Under the Lighthouse), inspired by the events of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has also been in development for a long time.

This is a first-person horror film about a Russian contract soldier in a support battalion who does not directly participate in the fighting on the front lines, but plays an important role in providing rear support.

«While your comrades 'defend' the Motherland, advancing along its borders, you follow them, arriving on the occupied scorched earth. Driving a truck, you drive through the deserted streets of destroyed villages and towns, carefully avoiding craters from explosions, while the empty remains of broken windows follow your every move,» the developers describe the project.

According to them, unlike other war games, Zero Losses doesn’t focus on action. It’s a slow, surreal «journey through the apocalypse» that doesn’t focus on violence, but «introduces us to its consequences.»

Recently, Podoba Interactive and Marevo Collective released the religious action horror platformer Blessed Burden, which may bring the release of Zero Losses closer.

Remote Reaper: FPV Drone

This is a simulator of an FPV drone operator in the conditions of modern warfare, developed by Game\Technical Designer at VG Entertainment Vladislav Fomenko. The game offers realistic control with a controller and simplified controls that allow you to easily control the drone with a keyboard and mouse.

In Remote Reaper, drones can strike enemy vehicles that have vulnerable spots. The player’s task is to find these critical points and deliver precise strikes to effectively destroy them.

«The game world is based on the concepts of modern warfare, using the latest military technology. Combat equipment and advanced drones play a crucial role in various conflicts, allowing players to experience the true tension of military operations,» says the developer.

The project was released in early access on Steam in April and is currently on sale for 200 UAH. Players can also try a free demo. Vladislav Fomenko supports Remote Reaper with regular updates, in particular, in June the project received an update that added a new map to the game — a large strategic facility of take-off and landing infrastructure.

«A new update is already in the game — it adds a new map inspired by real objects, as well as a mission inspired by recent events,» the developer wrote, hinting at the SBU’s «Website» operation.

Hollow Home

Hollow Home is an isometric narrative RPG set during the Russo-Ukrainian war. The game from Twigames Inc tells the story of the siege of a Ukrainian city through the eyes of a teenager.

The project is reminiscent of such famous indie hits as Disco Elysium and This War of Mine, and depicts an unnamed city, the prototype of which was Mariupol. According to the developers, it serves as a collective image of all Ukrainian cities currently occupied by Russia.

«The story of 14-year-old teenager Maxim begins on February 23, 2022 — these are the last 24 hours of the protagonist’s childhood. The next morning, Max wakes up to the sounds of falling bombs and artillery fire. The boy will have to survive in a new reality while Russian troops destroy his city,» the project is described in Twigames.

The developers emphasize that the game has no combat system and no real violence, and the focus is on «the consequences of war, not graphic details.»

In May, Twigames announced that the project had surpassed 30,000 wishlist additions. The developers are currently preparing a Kickstarter campaign. The game is scheduled for release in 2026, but players can already play the demo.

THREEDAYS

It is a military tactical shooter that reveals the reality of modern warfare, and is inspired by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to developers from CYBERNATION.TEAM, the game will offer a deep storyline, authentic atmosphere, and dynamic gameplay.

Players will meet real-life military personnel and veterans in THREEDAYS, whose appearances were recreated using photogrammetry technologies. Among them will be: Denis «Redis» Prokopenko, Yulia «Tyra» Paevska, Denisa Quebec, and Kyrylo Budanov.

«Each fighter has their own story, motivation, and set of abilities. Choose characters that fit your strategy and combine their skills to achieve your goal. From combat commanders to ordinary soldiers with exceptional combat characteristics,» the developers note.

The game doesn’t have a release date yet, but you can add it to your Steam wishlist.

Threads of War

Andriy Kostyushko, director of Creoteam studio (known for Collapse) and game designer of Football, Tactics & Glory, is working on the game «Threads of War» together with his 12-year-old son Askold. The project combines the mechanics of Battle City (a game from the NES era that Ukrainian gamers simply call «Tanchiki») and rogue-lite elements.

«Mechanized hordes of evil forces are attacking Ukraine: weak but numerous demons, fast dog-headed creatures, heavy monsters. Become one of the hundreds of thousands of knights of light who rose to defend their families, their homeland, and their future. The game shows how the territories of Ukraine were liberated in the first year of the war: from Gostomel to Kherson,» the description ofThreads of War says.

According to the developers, they want to convey «the story of Ukraine’s liberation in today’s terrible war» using metaphors, folklore images, and Ukrainian embroidery.

The project will offer reimagined and expanded Battle City mechanics (including boss battles and enemy infantry) and two-player co-op.

Threads of War was scheduled for release in late 2024, but now the game’s Steam page does not indicate a release date. For now, players can try the demo and add the project to their wishlist. 25% of the proceeds from Kosciuszko’s game will be donated to the Ukrainian Armed Forces for urgent needs.

Ukrainian Fight Drone Simulator

UFDS is an «ultra-realistic» FPV combat drone simulator from the SIMTECH SOLUTIONS team, which was introduced in 2024. The goal of the project is to convey the «emotions of modern combat» and give players the skills to pilot different types of drones.

To do this, the simulator has an «Academy» mode, which offers dozens of diverse missions that take place in real combat locations. They teach you how to perform combat tasks, taking into account various parameters, including the type of targets, their number and distance to them, weather conditions, time of day, electronic warfare. There is also a «Glider» mode, a training ground where players can create their own missions and experiment with different conditions and settings.

Ukrainian Fight Drone Simulator is currently in early access, which can be joined by invitation from the developers. The invitation is provided for a subscription to the Donatello service from $ 25 per month. Military personnel can access it for free, through a letter of demand from their unit. In June, the project received a major update, which added the Battle Ground mode for professional pilots.

Hell Of War

A Ukrainian large-scale tactical game that combines first-person shooter with real-time strategy. The player takes on the role of a combat drone operator to conduct reconnaissance, coordinate the actions of allied forces, direct artillery strikes, call in artillery mines, infantry, equipment, and drones.

Hell Of War also features a direct control mode that allows you to lead an infantry squad, control equipment, or guide a strike drone to a target.

The project is being worked on by a single developer under the pseudonym Ravens Row. In June, he announced that the game had been added to the wishlist over 1,200 times and released the first gameplay teaser.

Ukrainians: Our battle

A visual novel that depicts life in a country during wartime. Players take on the role of a volunteer who explores various locations, including schools and bomb shelters, museums and military fortifications near the front lines.

The gameplay of Ukrainians: Our battle involves interacting with various objects and people. Each object can be important: a house or car key, a phone, a first aid kit, models of military equipment, tanks, planes, ships, and sometimes even a board game, a book or an anime-style comic. Players will be able to make various decisions that will affect the finale.

Ukrainians: Our battle is created by computer science teacher Serhiy Khramov together with his students. «In the lyceum where I taught, there were very promising students who, after studying the basics of modeling in Blender, independently immersed themselves in more detailed study, reaching almost a professional level,» the developer notes.

The project has already collected over 2,000 wishlist additions. A demo version of Ukrainians: Our battle is due out at the end of the summer, with a release planned for September 2025.

UNBROKEN

A mysterious project from the Biopunk Labs team in the genre of interactive cinema, which will reveal the story of two sisters and civilians during a full-scale Russian invasion. The development is headed by Christian Zheregy, a Ukrainian director, journalist and war correspondent, founder of the Clear Sky Foundation, which dealt with veterans with PTSD.

According to him, it is a third-person game, which in form is most similar to Life is Strange from Don’t Nod. UNBROKEN will also resemble games like Beyond: Two Souls or Heavy Rain from Quantic Dream, but Biopunk Labs does not plan to make a high-budget AAA project.

«Biopunk Labs consists of both veterans of the game development industry and veterans of combat operations. Ukrainian and American veterans with military experience are working on the project. My goal, as the founder of the team, is to provide jobs specifically for war veterans, because I see that there is currently such a crisis and unpleasant situation among the IT industry, in particular in game development,» Zheregy said in an interview with dev.ua.

UNBROKEN is currently in pre-production and full development will begin later this year. The studio recently announced a vacancy for Concept Artists to work on concepts and promotional materials for their project.
