First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov announced the start of unblocking Ukrainian accounts on the Upwork freelance platform.
«Upwork has begun the process of unblocking accounts. Thank you to Ukrainian users for drawing attention to the problem», — Fedorov briefly noted.
Earlier, Ukrainian freelancers reported that their accounts were being blocked on Upwork in a mass manner. The wave of blockings included at least 100 cases, including accounts with an income of $300,000.
The situation, in particular, was drawn to the attention of the founder of Getmany.com and former community manager of Upwork in Ukraine, Kyrylo Kozak .
«External help is needed here. Upwork is one of the few platforms that really gave Ukrainians the opportunity to survive and scale during the war. But the situation is critical now. If possible, please help with the escalation of this issue,» he called on the Ministry of Digital Affairs and Mykhailo Fedorov to intervene.
The head of the Ministry of Digital Affairs reacted — he wrote a letter to Upwork CEO Hayden Brown, urging the platform to change its account blocking policy.
«We also ask you to introduce an individual approach and review the platform’s policy regarding users who were born or registered in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, but actually reside in the territory controlled by Ukraine and can provide evidence of this. The current approach discriminates against citizens who have not violated any rules, but are subject to restrictions solely due to their geographical registration», — Mykhailo Fedorov indicated in the letter.
Meanwhile, LinkedIn users are reporting that Upwork has begun a new wave of blocks, this time affecting freelancers from Pakistan.
«This evening I turned on my computer to start working as usual… and the first thing I saw was a message: 'Your account has been blocked.' For a moment I felt like the ground had disappeared from under my feet,» one of them reported.
Many Pakistani users have noted that this wave of blocking is similar to a glitch in Upwork — they hope that the platform will soon fix it and restore their accounts.
