The online solution shows where it is advisable to plant trees from a safety, ecological and climate perspective, and offers step-by-step action plans for projects from idea to tree care.
As reported in the SoftServe press release, the Ukraine Forest Restoration Platform combines spatial data, scientific recommendations and practical tools. The site allows you to identify suitable areas, form a strategy for interaction with the landowner, generate a detailed work plan and calculate the carbon footprint of the plantation, how much carbon the forest will retain over time. The solution was created by WWF-Ukraine in partnership with SoftServe within the framework of the OpenTech corporate pro bono program.
The team emphasizes that this is not «another location map,» but a complete constructor of responsible afforestation. The platform explains in clear language what to plant, where and how, so that initiatives benefit nature, people and communities, and do not repeat the mistakes of past decades. At the heart of the approach are the principles of climate-smart and nature-friendly forestry: protecting existing natural forests, refusing to afforest steppes, meadows and marshes, using local tree species, avoiding monocultures and forming mixed, sustainable plantations.
The pilot region is Lviv region, where there is an active community and a high demand for sustainable forest policy. Here it is already possible to test tools, collect feedback and scale the approach to other regions. For businesses, the platform will become a way to assess their own contribution to climate goals through a carbon calculator and involve employees in scientifically based projects. For authorities, it will support the implementation of national and international commitments agreed with the European Green Deal and the EU Forest Strategy until 2030.
WWF-Ukraine representatives emphasize the scientific nature of the approach and the importance of quick solutions in times of war and climate challenges. SoftServe adds that the initiative should shift the emphasis «from the number of seedlings planted to the quality of solutions,» and the IT sector can accelerate the scaling of the platform thanks to data and technology. The team invites other IT companies, scientists, communities, and businesses to participate.
Forests occupy about 16% of Ukraine’s territory, while scientists call at least 20% the minimum necessary. A significant part of the plantations after World War II were created with economic, not environmental, priority, so today they are less resistant to diseases and climate change and need renewal. The platform proposes to move from spontaneous actions to systemic restoration, which strengthens the country’s ecological security, supports water resources, reduces flood risks and provides the foundation for a future carbon market.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how SoftServe is integrating AI agents into teams and introducing a new generation profession — Intelligence Engineer. The company is scaling up the use of AI agents, which are already reducing development time by up to 70%.
