YouTube has tightened AdBlock blocking: Firefox is no longer a help
YouTube continues its aggressive fight against ad blockers: the latest update closes existing loopholes, including in Firefox. Viewers complain, but the platform does not give up: it’s either ads or subscriptions.
YouTube continues its aggressive fight against ad blockers: the latest update closes existing loopholes, including in Firefox. Viewers complain, but the platform does not give up: it’s either ads or subscriptions.
YouTube has begun a new phase in its fight against ad blockers. A large number of users are reporting another wave of messages like «Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube» and «Ad blockers violate YouTube’s terms of service,» which block video playback. This is reported by 9to5Google .
This is an improvement to AdBlock’s detection system, which previously had significant gaps, particularly in Firefox, where it was quite easy to bypass the restrictions. Now, it seems that these workarounds no longer work.
Despite constant resistance from users, YouTube remains firm: either you watch ads or you pay for Premium. The platform officially announced this position back in 2023, introducing technologies that block videos from playing when the blocker is enabled. But since then, viewers have been constantly trying to find ways to bypass the system — through extensions, custom scripts, or non-standard browsers.
However, Google is improving its detection tools. Judging by the numerous complaints on Reddit, the new wave of «bans» was unexpected for many, and caused a flurry of indignation. Some users are calling on YouTube to «come to terms», others accuse the company of excessive monetization. But there are also those who remind: advertising revenue goes directly to the creators of the videos, so blocking ads harms them.
The platform’s fight against ad blockers
By 2024, YouTube had already recorded millions of attempts to bypass ad blocking and launched a massive campaign to force notifications for violations. At the same time, the number of YouTube Premium subscribers has increased, as it is still the only official way to watch videos without ads.
It is expected that the «game of tug-of-war» between YouTube and AdBlock users will continue, as both sides have serious motivations: the former — profit, the latter — comfort.
Google recently began beta testing Lens on YouTube Shorts, which will allow users to search for information about objects in videos with a single tap while watching short clips.
Соціальні мережі та штучний інтелект формують глобальні наративи про війну в Україні. Як їх використовують українці та росіяни — аналітика від Foreign Policy
