Sony is planning a portable console that will be more productive than the Xbox Series S in terms of graphics and modern visual effects.
This is reported by «Mezh» with reference to a discussion on NeoGAF, where insider KeplerL2 stated that the upcoming portable PlayStation will be slightly stronger than the Xbox Series S in regular graphics and noticeably better in ray tracing and path tracing. That is, we are not talking about just another «pocket» console for simpler games, but about a device that can reach a picture level closer to home systems.
According to the insider, not only the chip itself will play an important role here, but also image scaling technologies. They should help the portable system produce a better picture without excessive load on the hardware. This is especially important for compact consoles, where manufacturers constantly have to find a balance between performance, heat, autonomy and case size.
Against this backdrop, the Xbox Series S remains a convenient starting point, as it is already a full-fledged home console, not a portable device. If KeplerL2's words are at least partially true, Sony wants to squeeze into the mobile format a level of graphics that was previously associated primarily with stationary systems. This is what makes the leak notable: we are not talking about an accessory like the PlayStation Portal, but about a separate gaming machine.
However, such statements should be treated with caution. Sony has not yet officially announced a new portable console, and names like «portable PlayStation 6» in such leaks are more likely to be used as a conventional designation for a device related to the next generation of PlayStation. That is, there is no confirmation of the final name, design, or exact specifications yet.
In the same discussion, the insider also mentioned Steam Deck 2, stating that Valve is supposedly targeting 2028. But the main intrigue of this story is something else: if the leak is confirmed, Sony may return to the portable console market not with a compromise streaming gadget, but with a truly powerful device that can compete even with the Xbox Series S.
