According to The Wall Street Journal, Beyermeister returned from vacation and was soon terminated. In a comment to the WSJ, she called the allegations false. OpenAI, the publication writes, stated that the manager made valuable contributions and that her departure was not related to the issues she raised during her work.
WSJ sources claim that Beyermeister was among those who spoke out against ChatGPT’s adult mode. This is a feature that would allow adult users to generate erotic texts and have conversations on 18+ topics. Among the arguments of opponents, they mention the risks of sexualizing chatbots, the possible increase in unhealthy emotional attachment to AI, and doubts that the existing safeguards and age verification reliably isolate teenagers from such content.
The WSJ also writes that the discussions involved employees who assess the impact of chatbots on human well-being, and there were warnings about the potential harm to vulnerable users. Despite this, the leadership of OpenAI’s applications division previously said that it intended to launch the 18+ mode in the first quarter of 2026.
Before OpenAI, Beyermeister spent more than seven years at Palantir, as well as four years on the Meta product team. Her departure highlighted how the issue of adult content in chatbots is becoming an issue of corporate risk, reputation, and user safety.
