Playground Games is rebooting the iconic RPG Fable and will release a new game in the fall
The new Fable will be a complete reboot of the series: without being tied to the timeline of the classic trilogy, with a completely open world of Albion, an updated combat system, and a reimagined morality that depends on the reaction of NPCs, rather than on the scale of «good and evil.»

According to Xbox Wire, the release of the new Fable from Playground Games is scheduled for the fall. During the Developer_Direct presentation, the team confirmed that the game is a reboot, not a sequel: the events of the previous parts do not determine the plot and do not limit the authors in building the world.
Game Director Ralph Fulton explains that the studio deliberately abandoned the chronology of the original Lionhead games in order to create «its own Albion» and a new story. According to him, this is necessary because almost two generations of consoles have passed since the release of the trilogy, and Playground Games is not trying to copy the style of the previous studio, but is creating its own version of Fable.
The plot starts in the classic format for the series: the player begins as a child, at the moment of awakening heroic abilities. After a time jump, the action continues in adulthood. The impetus for the story is the attack of a mysterious stranger, who turns the inhabitants of the hero’s native village, including his grandmother, into stone. The only clue is the mention of the Heroes' Guild in Bowerstown, but the game does not force you to move purely according to the plot and after leaving the initial settlement, the world is completely open.
Playground emphasizes that Fable is built on the principle of «a fairy tale, not a classic fantasy.» Instead of epic geopolitics and global conflicts, there are chamber stories, ordinary people and the consequences of the intervention of magic in their lives. This approach influenced both the visual style and the structure of quests.
The combat system combines melee, ranged attacks, and magic in a style-weaving format—the player can seamlessly combine swords, bows, and spells in one move. Enemies have weak spots, and battles are often built around tactical interaction with groups of opponents rather than duels.
Separately, the developers have rethought the moral system. Instead of a «good–evil» scale, the game uses reputation mechanics. The hero’s actions shape the NPC’s perception of him only when someone sees them. Reputations accumulate separately in each settlement and affect the characters’ attitudes, prices in stores, romantic interactions, and social scenarios. The game does not evaluate the player’s actions directly — the inhabitants of Albion do that.
Another key system will be the Living Population — over a thousand unique NPCs with names, jobs, daily routines, and their own homes. The settlements in the game are functional: the characters actually go to work, return home, react to the hero’s actions, and remember his actions.
The Fable series debuted in 2004 and has become one of the most iconic RPGs thanks to its freedom of choice, humor, and social mechanics. Microsoft announced a reboot of the franchise in 2020, and after several years of silence, the new version was officially unveiled during Developer_Direct 2026. The new Fable will be released on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass.
