Author Claude Code at Anthropic predicts that next year companies will begin to move away from the traditional role of the developer: AI agents will increasingly be responsible for writing code, and humans will be more involved in setting tasks and controlling the quality of the result.

According to Business Insider, Boris Cherny, on the Y Combinator podcast Lightcone, called 2026 the year of «crazy» shifts in AI and said that for him, «coding is practically solved,» and over time it will be so «for everyone, regardless of the domain.» Against this background, he believes, the very title of software engineer may lose its practical meaning: broader roles such as builder or product manager will appear in its place, and the old title will remain rather inertial.

Cherny describes the shift at the team level as well: engineers are less «writing lines» and more acting as editors and quality controllers, checking, debugging, and tweaking what agents have generated. He also noted that their team has a variety of functions involved in coding in one form or another, not just developers, including product, design, engineering management, and finance roles.

The article also provides examples of how processes are changing in startups: the founder of one of them said that «all the code» of the company was written by agents, and, according to him, such an approach would be impossible in 2024. At the same time, the publication mentions the side effects of dependence on AI: one of the engineers described «AI fatigue», when speed increases, but with it the load increases due to endless iterations of checks and corrections. Andriy Karpatyy is separately mentioned, who said in January that his manual coding skills began to «atrophy».

Previously, dev.ua wrote about how Stanford graduates complain that they can’t get jobs as software engineers because of AI.
