Digital sovereignty begins on your PC desktop. At least that’s what France has decided, and in early April the national interdepartmental office for digital affairs (DINUM) announced the abandonment of Windows in favor of Linux. Windows increasingly ties the user to Microsoft 365 and other services of American platforms, while Linux offers open source, transparency, and the ability to build an infrastructure where more key components remain under local control.

The Decisions Under Fire training simulator is not just another attempt to gamify training, but a tough and extremely relevant mirror test for anyone who holds a gun in their hands. Created by the Geneva Call team in the midst of the armed conflict in Ukraine, this simulator helps military personnel experience the same unbearable tension when there are only a few seconds to make a decision. It is an attempt to bring international humanitarian law (IHL) from dry theoretical exercises directly into an interactive component, where the law becomes part of tactics, and not just a paragraph in a textbook.

When an IT specialist from a defense company agreed to talk to dev.ua, the first thing he clarified was that his name cannot be revealed, the company cannot be named, and his position is also taboo. What exactly his employer company is training him for, how many people work there, is better left unsaid. «I can’t say almost anything. Or rather, absolutely nothing. Where I work, who I work with, what I do, who these developments are for, or where my work is. I can’t even tell my girlfriend, because if someone finds out, there’s a high probability that she’ll come for us,» the publication’s interlocutor says. The industry, which has grown from zero to over 1,500 companies in three years of full-scale war, operates by rules where silence is the basic security standard, not the exception. dev.ua tried to figure out exactly how security is arranged from the inside.
